Heating Nova: A Radiator Unit That Captures the Beauty of Heat

An Innovative Design by Chang Hee Lee

Heating Nova is a unique heating radiator unit that combines functionality with artistic expression. Designed by Chang Hee Lee, this heater captures the essence of heat through its interactive features and emotional appeal.

Heating Nova stands out from other heating units with its striking design and innovative properties. Constructed mainly from titanium and aluminum, the surface of the heater constantly interacts with the growing heat from the bottom. As time passes, it marks and records itself with traces or patterns of the expanding heat on its outer surface. This marriage between functionality and material features creates a dramatic juxtaposition, showcasing the oneness of the object and the perfection of its functional identity.

The realization of Heating Nova involved a series of experiments to explore the expanding gradational effects between heat and various materials. Chang Hee Lee burnt different types of metal sheets, including bronze, titanium, aluminum, steel, and copper, in various sizes and thicknesses. Through this process, he observed the rapidly growing gradation effect between the heat and the material. The gradual expansion performance of Heating Nova becomes more apparent over time, creating a visually captivating experience.

With dimensions of 550 mm in width, 36 mm in depth, and 825 mm in height, Heating Nova is not only a functional heating unit but also a work of art. Its aesthetic appeal and harmonization of form and function make it a standout piece in any space.

Heating Nova is more than just a heating device; it is a poetic expression of the principles of heat. By using a thoughtful combination of materials and function, it symbolizes the emotional value of warmth. The heater's unique interaction with the heat it produces invites users to perceive and interpret the comprehensive meaning behind it. It serves as a heating agency that embodies the fundamental value of heat through its distinctive design.

The creation of Heating Nova was a challenging endeavor for Chang Hee Lee. He personally crafted all the materials and parts, including cleaning, engraving, and polishing the titanium surface using sandpaper. This meticulous attention to detail and the material's features resulted in a consistent and well-polished finish. Despite the challenges faced during the production process, such as the use of hydrochloric acid, the final product showcases the alchemical aspects of Lee's design processes.

Heating Nova was exhibited at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in July 2009. Its unique design and innovative approach earned it the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2013. This prestigious accolade recognizes designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.

Heating Nova is not just a heater; it is a testament to the beauty and artistry that can be found in everyday objects. Its ability to capture and showcase the expanding heat in a visually captivating way sets it apart from traditional heating units. Chang Hee Lee's design exemplifies the fusion of art, architecture, and technology, creating a functional piece that adds a touch of sophistication to any space.
